Born and raised in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, Merafe is a dynamic young entrepreneur and private equity financier with almost two decades of proven success working in leading financial institutions. Her investment and management skills were developed from appointments at Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Standard Bank, Motseng Investment Holdings and as a Director of One Thousand & One Voices. Merafe has a clear vision and plan – for the growth of her company, its key stakeholders, and the role Moloto will play in the development of South Africa.
Merafe has an undergraduate degree in Economics from Swarthmore College and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
Navaid is a US-born financier and one of the pioneers of private equity investing in Africa. His investment experience has been developed over 30 years at the International Finance Corporation, as a Founding Partner of Emerging Capital Partners, as the Head of Standard Bank’s African Private Equity Business, as a Founding Partner of a US-funded mining investment fund and CIO at One Thousand & One Voices. After living all over the world Navaid considers his roots to be firmly embedded in South Africa which has been his home for the past 17 years.
Navaid holds an undergraduate degree in International Economics from George Washington University, and completed his Masters in Business Administration at the University of California Berkeley Haas School of Business.
Maya is passionate about the capacity for appropriately-structured investments to create broad-based value and accelerate the financial inclusion of historically disadvantaged groups, especially women. Raised in Johannesburg, she returned after her studies abroad to engage in African private equity and create impact on sustainable economic transformation.
Maya completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at the American International School of Johannesburg and holds a Bachelor of Commerce undergraduate degree with honours in Finance from the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business. She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Merafe and Navaid met while working in the African Private Equity division at Standard Bank in 2010. The duo struck an immediate rapport and continued to apply their skills as a team at One Thousand & One Voices, a US-based private equity company.
As Directors of the company they successfully concluded investments in the SA agribusiness sector before founding Moloto Capital Investments in 2016.
